Icons of the 1940s

Image
I'm back with the third installment of my Icons series. This time I'm focusing on the 1940s. The decade was all about glamour. Movie stars such as Rita Hayworth, Lauren Bacall and Ava Gardner were extremely popular fashion icons. Pin-up girls became all the rage. Gloves, hats and scarves were in style and a woman didn't complete her outfit with out one or all accessories. However not everything was glamorous, Until 1945 WWII was going on. During this time women took over mens jobs. The custom uniform for a woman was either overalls or trousers and  a cap, snood or scarf for head wear. Also shortages were around and not everything luxurious was available as those items were being shipped overseas to the men at war. Women had to be creative on items such as stockings and make-up. Here are a few women I consider 1940s icons. Rita Hayworth Lauren Bacall Ava Gardner Veronica Lake Hedy Lamarr Esther Williams So tha...

Icons of The 1930s

Image
I'm back with another installment of my Icons of the ..., this time I'm taking on the 1930s. Beginning in 1929 fashion became more conservative for women long gone were the days of short flapper dresses and in it's place came long skirts and waist lines that defined a more 'womanly shape'. As for beauty blonde hair became all the rage, the term 'blonde bombshell' was coined- as many movie stars dyed their hair blonde (think Jean Harlow) usually with bleach. However short hair was still instyle. Gone were the sleek bob styles and replaced with feminine curls. Eyebrows were plucked off and drawn in thin pencil lines. And lip gloss was introduced in 1930. Max Factor and Elizabeth Arden were household names. Basically everything became very glamorous and women wanted to copy what women in Hollywood looked like. Here's a few of the icons from the 1930s. Greta Garbo Marlene Dietrich Carole Lombard Jean Harlow ...

Icons of The 1920s

Image
I've decided I want to start something about famous women of decades past who are known as beauty and/or style icons. I'm starting with the 1920s and I will go through the 1970s. I'll probably do a post like this either once a month or every other month. Let's get started. Louise Brooks Famously known as an actress and for her bob haircut.  Clara Bow Famously known as an actress and for her (again) bobbed hair and heart shaped lips. Meaning she'd put her lipstick on in the shape of a heart which many women copied.  Mary Pickford Famously known as an actress and for her long locks.  Lillian Gish Famously known as an actress and (again) for her long locks which were never cut unlike Pickford who after cutting her hair in 1928 as a form of independence outraged fans. Gish's long locks fell well below her waist her whole life. Coco Chanel Famously known for being a fashion designer and for her style whi...
