Original and Remake: Cinderella
This month's Original and Remake is the classic fairytale, Cinderella. It is based on the fairy tale, The Glass Slipper. It was included by The Brothers Grimm in their collection Grimms' Fairy Tales. There have been many adaptations of the fairy tale including current era movies, a Broadway stage production and TV shows. However I am focusing on the Disney adaptations the animated 1950 version and the 2015 live-action version.
Cinderella (1950)
Directed By: Clyde Geronimi, Hamiltion Luske, Wilfred Jackson
Voices Of: Ilene Woods, William Phipps, Eleanor Audley
Running Time: 75 Minutes
Cinderella (2015)
Directed By: Kenneth Branagh
Starring: Lily James, Richard Madden, Cate Blanchett
Running Time: 106 Minutes
As I stated earlier, Cinderella, is one of those stories that has been told over and over again. Personally, I love the story, a girl whose lost both her parents and is a servant to her wicked stepmother and stepsisters but is still able to see the bright side of things and while she isn't looking for love or a prince she falls in love with one. It's just one of those films where you believe something good can turn out of something bad. The 1950 animated version is very glossy and shiny and Cinderella wears one of my favorite movie dresses. The soundtrack is fun and catchy (like most Disney soundtracks) especially Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo. The the main female voice actors Ilene Woods (Cinderella) and Eleanor Audley (Lady Tremaine) are very believable and convincing. I have to be honest Prince Charming is pretty boring in this version. The 2015 version is live-action and it really is a beautiful film. Lily James makes a good Cinderella, she's kind-hearted, pretty and has a lovely voice. Prince Charming played by Richard Madden has a larger role showing him more than just a handsome prince who must marry and produce children soon. I liked this Prince Charming better as Richard gave him more of a personality. Cate Blanchett is Lady Termaine and she does play evil fantastic. I have to add I did enjoy Helena Bonham Carter's Fairy Godmother a little bit more than the animated one. She just brings a little more spark to the character. I don't have one pick as I normally do because I like both versions in the end it comes down to which version you'd rather watch, an animated version or a live-action one.
Until Next Time,
Ashley A.
