Fashion Through Film: Les Parapluies de Cherbourg (The Umbrellas of Cherbourg)

I'm back with another installment of Fashion Through Film, this time with Les Parapluies de Cherbourg (The Umbrellas of Cherbourg). This is one of my favorite fashion films as I really love Genevieve's wardrobe and it's actually something I'd wear in real life. Anyway without further ado let's begin.

When we first meet Genevieve we find her working in her mother's umbrella shop. Her outfit almost resembles a school uniform here with the plaid skirt and white blouse.

Later we find Genevieve on a date with her boyfriend, Guy. As you can see she's dressed in a pink coat. A white clutch and yellow hair ribbon complete her look. Guy isn't dressed too shabby either in his pinstripe suit and trench.

Ah we get to a sad part in the film. Guy has told Genevieve he's been drafted in the Algerian War. After spending the night together she sees him to the train station. Even as her love departs she's dressed well in a trench coat. A pastel blue scarf and black hair ribbon complete her look. Again, Guy also looks nice as he boards the train in a brown suit and blue button-down.

Months pass and Genevieve finds herself pregnant. This is the scene where she tells her mother. I like the fact they are both dressed in red against a pink background.

Also during this time Genevieve's mother finds she is running low on money and goes to sell some of her jewelry. Which unfortunately none is sold, however a wealthy suitor is interested in Genevieve and comes to dinner. I really love Genevieve's white coat and all white accessories here. She's in white and almost pure and her mother in bright, loud yellow and dark black accessories.

This is a scene from the dinner. I wanted to include it because I love the shot and it looks like something out of a fairy tale.

Even while pregnant Genevieve favors her pastels. She continues to write to Guy but his letters become less frequent. Her mother tells her Guy doesn't love her anymore.

Genevieve's wealthy suitor, Ronald, is still interested in her. She breaks the news she's pregnant. Ronald says he wants to marry her and he will raise the child as his.

Genevieve decides getting married is the best thing for her future so agrees to marry Ronald.

Several years later Genevieve and Guy run into each other around Christmastime. Guy is also married with a family. As you can see Genevieve now dons a more mature look long gone are her pastels and hair ribbons and are now replaced with fur and pearls.

Until Next Time,
Ashley A.
