Original and Remake: Mildred Pierce
Here is January's Original and Remake. This month I'm focusing on Mildred Pierce. It is based on the 1941 novel of the same name by James M. Cain. There are two versions I am focusing on in this post, the 1945 film and the 2011 miniseries.
Mildred Pierce (1945)
Directed By: Michael Curtiz
Starring: Joan Crawford, Ann Blyth, Zachary Scott
Running Time: 111 Minutes
Mildred Pierce (2011)
Directed By: Todd Haynes
Starring: Kate Winslet, Evan Rachel Wood, Guy Pearce
Running Time: 336 Minutes (5 Part Mini-Series)
Usually I say how I prefer one over the other but in this case I can't! I like both of these versions and I think they both bring something different to the table. While both versions are based on the book- which I do recommend reading- the mini-series tends to follow the book more. If you prefer film noir, I'd suggest watching the film. If you prefer watching multiple episodes and over all like drama more I'd suggest you watch the mini-series. However if you are able I do suggest you watch both versions. Both Joan Crawford and Kate Winslet each bring something different to Mildred. Joan tend to play Mildred with a bit of a mean streak- which she was always good as playing, whereas Kate plays her with a more sympathetic side (and at least for me) I feel sorry for this Mildred than the other. I have to point out in the mini-series the actress that plays young Veda (Morgan Turner) is exceptional. She takes the spoiled, bratty kid to a whole other level. I have to say that while Ann Blyth was able to play a decent Veda this kid was incredible. I've watched a lot of movies and TV shows with kid actors playing brats but she outdid them all! Both the film and mini-series have their own standouts in the supporting cast. The original has the likes of Eve Arden (as Ida) and Butterfly McQueen (as Lottie) and the mini-series has Mare Winningham (as Ida) and Melissa Leo (as Lucy). A few things that make the two different- In the film there are flashbacks and a voice-over which is not in the mini-series. Also *Spoiler Alert* The murder scene was put in the film as the censorship code would not allow an affair to be shown between Veda and Monte, however the mini-series shows the affair. In conclusion I'd say both versions are worth watching but if you prefer one over the other just watch that one.
Until Next Time,
Ashley A.
