Fashion Through Film: The Wizard of OZ
I love movies and I love fashion so I've decided to combine the two and call it Fashion Through Film. Once a month (or every other month) I'll take a classic film with iconic fashion and post about it. This month I'm starting with The Wizard of OZ.
At the beginning the film is in black and white. Here you can see Dorothy's gingham dress.
After the tornado, Dorothy finds herself in a very colorful place, OZ. Here you can see her blue gingham dress and blue ribbons.
The first person Dorothy meets in this magical land is Glinda, The Good Witch. Who comes and goes as a pink bubble, how else would you travel? Glinda is dressed very princess-esque. She's wearing a pink, glittery, poofy dress. Of course no look would be complete without accessories, a matching crown and a star shaped wand complete her look.
The next people Dorothy meets are the munchkins. They live in Munchkinland. As you can see the munchkins favor color and very wild hairstyles.
Here are more residents of Munchkinland in their colorful threads.
After a loud explosion The Wicked Witch of The West emerges from a cloud of smoke and she's incredibly angry (well, you probably would be angry if your sister was killed when a house dropped on her). She dresses in all black including her hat and shoes. Her skin is green and she has a long pointed chin. Of course every witch needs a broom, to get around on.
The other reason The Wicked Witch is upset, Dorothy has the ruby red slippers she wants. But who wouldn't want these shoes, all shiny and sparkly?
After leaving Munchkinland and following the yellow brick road, Dorothy comes across a Scarecrow, who wants a brain. Just like a regular scarecrow he's filled with hay. He wears a green jacket, brown pants and a black hat. String holds him together, one is tied around his neck the other around his waist.
Dorothy and Scarecrow continue following the yellow brick road until they come across a tin man, who is looking for a heart. As you can see he's made out of tin and his face and hands are painted silver.
The next character the gang encounters is the Cowardly Lion, who is looking for courage.
Also I give major props to Bert Lahr because you know that suit was so hot.
Finally the foursome makes their way to Emerald City, where everything is emerald!
The Gatekeeper rocks an all green outfit complete with a fur hat and gloves.
The gang gets makeovers. The tin man gets polished up, the scarecrow gets his stuffing back in, the lion gets clipped and has a red ribbon tied in his mane and Dorothy gets a new hair do with a ribbon completing the look. You can also see more citizens of OZ all in green.
Finally they meet OZ, who looks like this. However I will give him credit for being a sharp dresser. He pairs different shades of green and they mesh well.
Unfortunately for Dorothy and her new friends The Wicked Witch has been keeping a watchful eye on them. She gets her minions of flying monkeys, who are dressed similar to bellhops- with blue jackets with red and white detailing and bellboy hats, to fly out and capture them.
After Dorothy is captured the rest of the gang goes to rescue her. To blend in they dress as The Winkie Guards. As you can see they favor grey and red. They have green skin just like The Wicked Witch. They accessorize with grey fur hats, matching boots and shiny swords.
After successfully killing The Wicked Witch the gang is rewarded, The Tin Man gets a ticking (clock) heart, The Cowardly Lion gets a courage badge and The Scarecrow gets a diploma showing he's smart. So OZ tells Dorothy he'll take her home aboard his hot air balloon. That is until Toto gets distracted and jumps out.
Glinda magically appears and tells Dorothy she's had the power to go home all along. After saying goodbye to her new friends she clicks her heels three times while saying There's No Place Like Home.
When Dorothy wakes up she finds herself back home in black and white and vows she'll never leave home again.
Until Next Time,
Ashley A.
