Original and Remake: Sleeping Beauty

July's Original and Remake is the fairy tale Sleeping Beauty. There have been many adaptations of this story including movies, a ballet and more. It's based on the story of the same name by Charles Perrault. For this post I am focusing on the Disney versions, the animated one from 1959 and the live-action version from 2014.

Directed By: Clyde Geronimi, Eric Larson, Wolfgang Reitherman, Les Clark
Voices Of: Mary Costa, Bill Shirley, Eleanor Audley
Running Time: 75 Minutes

Maleficent (2014)
Directed By: Robert Stromberg
Starring: Angelina Jolie, Elle Fanning, Sharlto Copley
Running Time: 97 Minutes

If I'm being completely honest with you Sleeping Beauty is a boring story. Princess Aurora is put under a sleeping spell and Prince Phillip fights a fire breathing dragon to save her. It's basically your damsel in distress story. The original has beautiful animation, the soundtrack is pleasant and at 75 minutes gets the whole story told without lasting too long. Maleficent has a lot more action. I really love Lana Del Rey's cover of Once Upon A Dream it's a darker sound than the happy original. Elle Fanning plays Princess Aurora and she's not bad, she's given more to work with than the animated Aurora, plus we get a look at Aurora as a small child and how Maleficent has always watched over the girl. Angelina Jolie is pretty great at Maleficent, then again, she's able to play those wicked, evil parts well. Personally, I don't really love either version but I feel that the original is a classic and while it can be boring at times it is one of those classic Disney movies I feel everyone should see at least once. I do suppose if you enjoy action more or are a fan of one of the actors in Maleficent you'd enjoy that version more.

Until Next Time,
Ashley A.
