Original and Remake: Psycho
I'm back with my monthly edition of Original and Remake. This month I'm focusing on Psycho. There are two versions of this film, the original from 1960 and the remake from 1998. The film is based on the 1959 book of the same name by Robert Bloch. This franchise went on to include 3 sequels, a TV film spin-off and a TV prequel series.
Psycho (1960)
Directed By: Alfred Hitchcock
Starring: Anthony Perkins, Janet Leigh, Vera Miles
Running Time: 109 Minutes
Psycho (1998)
Directed By: Gus Van Sant
Starring: Vince Vaughn, Anne Heche, Julianne Moore
Running Time: 104 Minutes
By a long shot the original is the best version of this film, honestly there's no comparison. The original has Alfred Hitchcock's incredible directing, the score is chilling and Anthony Perkins is so believable as Norman Bates. Sadly the remake is is color and that's what ruins it. Director, Gus Van Sant supposedly shot it scene by scene like Hitchcock did but it's not the same. In black and white it's suspenseful and in color that's gone. By the way I'm not knocking technicolor and there are several Hitchcock films in color that I like but some films are best in black and white. If I were to recommend one it's the original 1960 version.
Until Next Time,
Ashley A.
